General FAQ’s

The Mimos® Pillow is a device specially designed for the prevention and correction of postural cranial deformities in infants, such as plagiocephaly.

Mimos® has a therapeutic purpose.

Mimos® products are classified as Class I medical devices, are subject to pharmacovigilance and comply with the most stringent European quality and safety standards applicable to these products, which is why Mimos® is not a pillow like those commonly used to improve rest, although it could be confused with them due to the way it is used.

Thanks to its anatomical design and the materials used in its manufacture, the Mimos® Cushion manages to distribute the weight of the baby’s head over a wider surface and prevents it from concentrating solely on the contact area (the main cause of postural cranial deformities), thus relieving cranial pressure by up to 400% and allowing normal development.

Its three-dimensional structure also gives it excellent absorption and breathability properties.

Various clinical studies accredit its efficacy, which is highest during the first 6 months of life, when the skull is particularly malleable. After this period it is more complicated to correct this type of deformity as the skull acquires greater consistency, although it is not until 16-18 months (the age at which the cranial fontanelles close) when it will still be possible to correct them, and more importantly, to prevent them from worsening.

For this reason, prevention and early attention are the best way to deal with this type of ailment, alternating the use of Mimos® with other techniques such as carrying or Tummy Time, or even in combination with orthotic bands, when the case requires it.

Yes, safety is a vital element and of the utmost importance in the development of our products, which is why we have carried out various studies to guarantee it.

The certifications obtained by Mimos° products are the following:

Anti-suffocation certification – TÜV Rheinland
Airflow safety – Bureau Veritas
No risk of CO2 re-inhalation
International Quality Standard for Medical Devices – ISO 13485
European safety for toys – EN 71
Class I medical device in accordance with European legislation – CE marking
Product free of substances harmful to health – Oeko-Tex 100 Certificate

Yes, Mimos® has successfully passed the most exhaustive safety tests and also, thanks to its anatomical design, it allows the baby to adopt a correct posture.

The Mimos® Cushion offers total freedom of movement for the baby so that he can adopt the most comfortable position during sleep. The recommendations that advise against the use of pillows are based on their shape and especially on the risk of suffocation. This is where Mimos® stands out and sets itself apart from other baby pillows, thanks to the safety certifications obtained.

94% of the volume of the Mimos® Cushion is air.

The Mimos® Cushion relieves and distributes the pressure on the head as it grows. From the age of 6 months, the head grows more slowly, which is why the improvement is also slower. However, until the fontanelles close, there is still the possibility of correcting cranial asymmetry. The extent to which Mimos will be able to correct will depend on a number of factors such as: the actual cranial morphology, the severity of the asymmetry, age and the rate of growth of the skull, which can vary between babies.

It is important to obtain a treatment plan from a professional (paediatrician, osteopath and/or physiotherapist) to monitor the evolution of the condition.

Yes, clinical studies have been carried out in both ways: with and without the Mimos Cover, demonstrating equal efficacy, although we strongly recommend the use of the Mimos Cover for hygienic reasons as it is a product susceptible to soiling (sweat, regurgitations…).

The Mimos Cover has a 100% cotton composition and can be washed in hot water (max. temp. 40º), so that, with the use of the Cover, we will avoid frequent washing of the Cushion and thus avoid the early deterioration of the fibres that make up the cushion.

We exclusively recommend the use of the Mimos® Cover to maintain the breathability qualities of the Mimos® Cushion as well as to adapt perfectly to its oval shape.

The Mimos® Cushion is specially designed to correct Plagiocephaly and Brachycephaly, but has also been shown to be effective in some cases of Scaphocephaly.

El Cojín Mimos® se compone esencialmente de un tejido 100% poliester de última generación. Todos nuestros proveedores de materiales utilizados para la fabricación de Mimos® cuentan con certificación Oeko-Tex®.

No, as these chemical components can be harmful to babies. Mimos® complies with BS5852 and ISO 12952 flammability safety regulations. Mimos is made of 100% Polyester and Polyester is naturally flame retardant.

Mimos® products are manufactured entirely by hand in Barcelona (Spain) under the international quality standard ISO 13485 and following strict quality controls.

However, we have a network of authorised establishments where you can find them as well as a network of distributors in many countries, offering you the possibility of purchasing them through their points of sale.

Use and maintenance

The baby should be placed in the supine position (face up) with the head in the central cavity of the cushion. It is designed for use while the baby is lying down, either during rest or play, and adapts perfectly to devices such as the cot, bassinet, or blanket/playpen, and is also suitable for use in the pram or prams Group 0 (Size P).

Under no circumstances should the baby be placed face down as it is not designed for use in this position.

It is important to always follow the instructions for use and storage that come with the Mimos® Cushion for maximum effectiveness and to extend its useful life while maintaining its properties.

Thanks to the range of sizes we have developed, the Mimos® Cushion is suitable for use from birth (even in the case of premature babies), and can be adapted to the different stages of growth.

Depending on the age at which the Mimos® Cushion is used and the symptoms of the baby’s skull, it can be used for preventive or corrective purposes. It is strongly recommended to use the Mimos® Cushion in the first six months of life because the head grows rapidly and the skull is particularly malleable during this period, which allows for very favourable results.

Each of the sizes has an assigned wearing period based on the baby’s head circumference. We recommend changing to the next size up before reaching the limit value of the size in use.

The Mimos® Cushion can be effective until the cranial fontanelles close (16-18 months), but after this period, you can continue to use the cushion as a sleep aid.

No, the cushion is designed for the baby to rest on it in the supine (face up) position and its effectiveness depends on this. Experts recommend that babies rest in the supine position and this has been the premise followed in clinical trials. Even so, the Mimos® Cushion offers the baby freedom of movement so that he can turn his head to both sides and its effectiveness has been demonstrated when the head rests correctly on the cushion and with the back against the mattress.

The Mimos® Pillow is a medical device and should therefore be used individually, i.e. one pillow for each baby. After continuous use, its shape may be altered, compromising its effectiveness, which is why it is not recommended to use a pillow that has already been used by another baby. It is also important to take into account other factors that make it inadvisable to use a used MIMOS® Pillow, such as storage and care, which could alter its ergonomic shape, or those causes related to the hygiene of the product itself.

It is easy to wash and dries quickly (not suitable for tumble dryers). It can be washed by hand or in the washing machine, always in cold water (max. temp. 20°) and using a programme for delicate clothes. We recommend not to mix it with other garments and in any case to use a net bag in order not to tear it.

Choose the correct size

The Mimos® Pillow is available in five different sizes to adapt to the morphology of the baby. The value we use to choose the size is the cranial perimeter, which in combination with the baby’s age, allows us to choose the right size to achieve the desired pressure relief effect and thus provide a correct rest for the cervical area.

Size S. If your baby is less than 4 months old and has a head circumference of 41 cm, then the cervical area may not be developed enough to wear a size M. A size S should be used.

You can opt for size M. If your baby is over 4 months old and has a head circumference of 41 cm, then the cervical area is more developed and you can opt for a size M, although it will also be within the range of size S.

No. It is essential to use the right size at the right time to achieve the desired results. Remember that size S can be used until the baby’s head circumference reaches 46 cm, which is normally between 8 and 10 months of age.

The range of use in size S and P is the same, although the design of the latter is specifically for use in Group 0 devices, prams and pushchairs where size S is too wide.

Size P is not suitable for the cot, as the baby will easily slip out of the cushion.

The Mimos Size P cushion can be used in group 0 devices (e.g. Maxi-Cosi) when these are used for walking or while the baby is resting, but is not approved for use in a moving car for safety reasons.
